About the Director

Kathy HuangKathy Huang’s career as a filmmaker began in the dusty fields of South Texas. There, inspired by her experiences teaching at-risk youth in a rural high school, she produced her first documentary Scribble’s Creations (2004). Shot with the assistance of her former students, the film follows a high school dropout navigating the difficult world of adulthood. Since then, Kathy has continued to work with marginalized communities to tell their stories. Her subjects have included a charismatic drag king in San Francisco, a young veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress, and an Asian-American beauty pageant contestant. Her award-winning films have been shown in schools, on television, and at film festivals across the world.

Currently, Kathy is hard at work developing a documentary on a remarkable transgender community in Indonesia. The film will explore the group’s traditional integration into Indonesian society, as well as its most recent clash with religious fundamentalists in the country.

Kathy holds a B.A. in History from Harvard University and a M.A. in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University. She is based in Los Angeles where she works as a freelance cinematographer and editor.
